2016 [On Stage]
When you’re in the thick of a thing, it’s sometimes impossible to know how it’ll all turn out when it ends. Throughout the year, I didn’t really feel like I was getting to many shows, but as I look back at the list for 2016, I’m surprised it’s as healthy as it is. There it is in writing: ten shows, from local Chicago productions to Broadway blockbusters. What it lacks in quantity it certainly makes up for in quality.
History is Happening
In 1996, I was a freshman in high school. A freshman in a new high school in a new town in a new house. That year I discovered RENT with the rest of the world and nothing was ever the same again. I’ve loved musicals since I was small, when my mom took me to see CATS when I was seven. Six? Either way, I was tiny and my little brain was impressionable and I fell in love with this art form unlike anything else, the American musical. (Yes, CATS is by a British guy, but it set Broadway records, mmmkay?). While my friends were listening to Green Day and…
2015 [on stage]
Despite spending a lot of time at the movies this year, I managed to fit in a handful of live theater, too – shows that stretched from Broadway to London and back to Chicago. I saw nine shows in all, which puts my theater attendance at less than once per month…maybe I was busier with movies than I realized! Whether a Broadway revival or a local production of a classic, I enjoyed each show for different reasons. The coming year sees a touring production of Fun Home hitting Chicago and my NYC trip to see Hamilton on Broadway. Add in my ongoing effort to get to more local shows, I forecast…
2014 [on stage]
One list I didn’t craft in 2013 was a list of shows I’d seen since moving to New York, most likely because I only had a half a year to draw from and didn’t make it to many at all (Broadway tickets are expensive!) So when I started to pull together a list of what I saw in 2014, I decided to add in 2013, too. Looking back, it makes for quite a variety of shows – straight plays and musicals, big hits with big stars and lesser-known, just as impressive productions. It still kills me I’m a train ride away from all this talent, and at just a week…
NYC List: BROADWAY 2014
This is one of many posts in my NYC List series, in an effort to keep myself exploring the city. See where it started, and keep an eye on this tag for more posts. Let me be totally honest here: if I could afford it, I’d be at a new show every night of the week. It kills me that tickets run anywhere from $80 – $175 for a major production, because my budget cannot handle that mess once a month, let alone once a week or something. I’ve only seen a few shows since moving here, and seeing how it’d be impossible to check out every show I want to, I’ve narrowed down the…
Nice people are the best
I don’t always know what to write about in this space – do you want to hear about every movie I see (it’s a lot of movies)? The latest adventure in the city (making a delivery guy bring me dinner in the rain!)? I worry it all starts to get old after awhile. I will always, however, blog about those moments in life where others are just genuinely nice – to me, or to anyone at all. I simply can’t leave these moments unrecognized. And I’m pretty sure what we could use more of in this world are reminders that people are actually nice. That more often than not, they…
