    Coming Soon: Summer 2016

Later this year, I’ll spell out by month every movie I plan to see before we ring in 2017, as I’ve been doing on this space for the last couple of years. It’s the best time of the year for great film, and I’m always heading out to see one or two or three movies in a week. Sharing all that screen time here is what this space is all about. I haven’t been as consistent about posting my summer watch plans, mainly because the season of studio blockbusters and shallow date movies is not so much my thing. But as I perused a few summer release calendars and my…

    Watch This: Brooklyn

In January, as I trudged through mountain snow between theaters to catch what I could at Sundance, I kept tabs on my phone, trade alerts pinging every few hours with the latest deal-making news: what’s hot, what’s not, what’s selling, who’s buying. This was the year Me and Earl and The Dying Girl caused a ruckus when the production team turned down a bigger deal in favor of a more creative one. And it was the year Brooklyn, an unassuming mid-century Irish love story, found its way into the hearts of festival audiences and to Fox Searchlight, where it’s been handled with such care that it will do the same…

    Coming Soon: November

November hits the sweet spot of Fall releases, as the great films are poised for a strong end-of year run before awards campaigning goes into full effect. More than a few films opening this month are already garnering Best Picture buzz – I imagine the film taking home to top Oscar is in the mix here somewhere. November 6 Spectre – What other film franchise is still going as strong as 007? The answer is none, and there’s a reason it’s still a mainstay: dashing leading man, edge-of-your-seat action and a ride always worth its ticket price. I’ll be there. Watch the trailer Spotlight  – If I were a voting member of the Academy…

    Watch this: Spotlight

After a week watching films at TIFF as directed, I am not ashamed to admit that I took some time on my last day to see a few films I wanted to see. That included The Danish Girl (skip it) and He Named Me Malala (catch it). I would’ve seen more had there been enough hours in the day, but alas I could only make so many work. The one film I was not going to miss was Spotlight, a film I had heard exactly nothing about until just after its first TIFF screening when the trade headlines read “Spotlight speeds to front of Best Picture race.” With buzz like that,…

    Watch This: Citizenfour

I love a good documentary. And a good documentary, like any other film genre, is hard to come by. Last year’s heavy-hitters like Blackfish and The Act Of Killing stood out in a pack of less-than-worthy non-fiction pics. This year, Citizenfour snuck up on me. As in, I hadn’t heard anything about it until I was getting alerts about its premiere at New York Film Festival. And it premiered with a bang. I’m not sure where I come down on the whole “The NSA is watching” scandal. Is it crazy in scope and lawlessness? Yes, of course. Is it impacting my life on a daily basis? Nope. Will it at some point?…

    Watch This: 10 Film Picks

So this is a first for me: a blog post by request. What’s more, a blog post about movies by request. Happy to oblige! I was recently asked to toss together a top ten list of films I’d recommend viewing. That’s it. That was the request. No criteria, no specifications. Which is simultaneously liberating and daunting! Ten classic films to watch? Sure. Ten favorites from childhood? I can do that. Ten overlooked indies worth checking out? No problem. But just ten films to watch? Where to start!? In order to narrow it down (and hopefully make this list as watchable as possible for everyone), I’m imposing my own criteria: we’re going…
