183 hours on screen. Give or take.

By my count, I watched 124 films in 2013. That’s films I’d seen for the first time – new this year, or new to me. I didn’t count any films I was re-watching (like White Christmas, the film that’s on while I write this).

I feel like that’s not too shabby. I also feel like it’s nothing compared to years I programmed a film festival and watched 200+ feature films in three months.

In this post, I’ve listed every film I saw from January 1 – December 22, 2013. I’ll update the number by December 31, because I imagine it’ll be higher by at least a few. Read on for a few things I discovered in gathering the list, and check out every title below, too. And coming soon, my favorites of the year – best films, best documentaries, best performances, honorable mentions. I might’ve created a spreadsheet to manage it all…

  • Of the 124 films I watched, 70 were 2013 releases (6 that’ll come out next year), 48 were older films I’d seen for the first time (please don’t judge that I just saw Pulp FictionRaging Bull and Magnolia this year!), 21 were films I watched for work (noted with a * in the list below).
  • Of the 124 films, 29 are documentaries – I honestly thought that number would be much higher!
  • Several of the films (14) have Sundance 2013 connections, though I only saw a few of them in January. Surprising (or not), though: some of the films I saw in the first month of the year are my favorites overall (which I’ll call out in a future post).
  • Strong showing by women in film for me – standout performances from Amy Acker, Brie Larson, Sandra Bullock, Lindsay Burdge, Kathryn Hahn, Lake Bell, Julia Louis Dreyfus and so many more. Impressed.
  • But then, I have several films yet to see with male leads – American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, Her, Saving Mr. Banks, and Dallas Buyers Club are all on my list before the end of the year.
